FOOD WASTE AND WHY IT IS A PROBLEM

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest country for food wastage discarding over
300 kilos of food per person every year. In direct contrast, more than 20 million people in Indonesia can’t meet their daily dietary requirements due to food insecurity.

It is so important as we enter this new year to consider our choices regarding food waste. Knowing exactly what to buy and how much will help you save time and money! Zero Waste Bali is here to provide you with a fantastic way to order meal plans with our new Recipe Cards; designed to reduce food waste!

Household food waste can be any edible item of food that is not eaten, food items that are wasted or discarded during food preparation, spoiled produce including fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs and bread, and food that is not consumed before expiration and therefore thrown in the bin. The majority of this waste simply comes from buying more than we consume.

Why Does It Matter?

#1 Food Insecurity

Globally, people waste 527 calories per person per day more than twice as much food as scientists had previously estimated. Reversing the situation would feed an additional two billion people; enough to nourish double the amount of people in need. Currently, over 30% of the world’s food is wasted.

#2 The Environment

Landfills are full of unwanted and discarded food. Over time, the food starts to breakdown emitting a source of methane; a potent greenhouse gas with over 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the global food system is one of the largest contributors to climate change.

#3 Air Pollution

When waste and other material are burned to “disappear” many toxic pollutants are sent out into the air. Open burning is commonplace in Bali, and the ash that remains will either continue to damage the soil or be carried away into local waterways. Emissions from burning food waste are serious concerns as uneaten food is rarely discarded separately from toxic items such as plastic food containers and bags.

Reducing Food Waste

Have you ever walked into the supermarket and felt confused about what you need to buy to cook a meal for you or your family? It can be challenging to guess each ingredient’s correct amount for every meal without forgetting something or buying too much. Purchasing Zero Waste Bali Recipe Cards will help you reduce your food waste by offering the proper portions for every meal.

Research shows that a shopping list significantly helped households to reduce food waste. A new study displayed that those eating a healthier diet, mainly high in fruits and vegetables, wasted a higher percentage of food due to produce spoiling.

This is where the Zero Waste Bali Recipe Cards can help you manage your shopping list and eliminate unwanted household food waste. Let’s face it, throwing out rotten fruit and vegetables is not fun; and we believe it is avoidable.
